It’s #FundraisingFriday :: Please Donate $10 to Your Favorite Nonprofit!
#FundraisingFriday is a campaign meant to inspire individuals to commit to donating $10 to one of their favorite nonprofits every Friday. First tweeted in May 2012 from @NonprofitOrgs, the #FundraisingFriday hashtag has since then been tweeted and retweeted thousands of times.
If you are a nonprofit, using the #FundraisingFriday hashtag is a simple way to ask for your supporters to donate and hopefully you’ll be able to convert a few fans, followers, and friends into donors.
If you are a donor, please post the name and website of the nonprofit that you donated to below. I’ll do my best to help get the word out about your generosity and your favorite nonprofits. Also, each Friday through the end of 2013 I am going to donate $10 to one of my Favorite Nonprofits. I hope you join me – if not every Friday, then at least one Friday a month. 🙂

I choose to donate to http://www.danhalpert.com, a website in which my son is raising funds for Bike and Build.
Bike and Build organizes college students who bicycle across the country this summer, in his case from Providence to Seattle, educating people they meet along the way about the affordable housing crisis AND participating in home reconstruction projects.
Every donation brings Dan closer to his goal and focuses more good towards solving this national problem.
He is just past 1/2 way towards his goal to raise $4500 for Bike and Build.

I chose CharityVision international. CharityVision, a nonprofit 501c3 entity, empowers local physicians in developing countries to provide free surgery services to the poor of their own country. This organization is incredibly efficient and has created a sustainable model. They average about 30,000 procedures a year. The big kicker for me is that the average cost of saving someone’s sight is only $25! That’s impressive. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness and a relatively simple, and proven surgery can restore vision. Imagine going without your sight. Now think about that in an impoverished area. Very scary, huh.

I am donating to the Paul Carlson Partnership (http://www.paulcarlson.org), where both my workdays and my heart are. The Paul Carlson Partnership has done medical work in the D.R. Congo since 1968, and we are currently also doing a major agricultural microfinance program with the help of a grant from USAID. Congo is the poorest country on earth, and the Equateur province, in the northwest of the country, where we work, is one of the poorest provinces. We support 5 hospitals and 94 village clinics, and our microfinance program includes 2,800 individual farmers, 47 bicycle transporters, and 15 wholesalers. Every dollar given goes a long way in Congo, and every donor makes a real difference.
As a Marine Mama, my vote and my donations go to Operation Gratitude (http://www.OperationGratitude.com ), the volunteer-based non-profit org that sends care packages to troops deployed overseas, to their children and families left behind, and to Wounded warriors recuperating in transition units. We have provides a haven for heart patients and their families while they are seeking medical care away from home. We offer solutions to financial and emotional problems often associated with a family member undergoing cardiac treatment. These problems include finding housing near a hospitalized patient, paying for the family to live in another city while a loved one undergoes treatment, providing emotional support to a heart patient, and accessing basic living needs.

I was a casual supporter of various organizations but after the September 11th events, I felt that I had to do something more for the brave men and women than put a bumper sticker on my car that said “I Support Our Troops”. I was lucky to hear of a grass-roots organization that sends care packages to service members deployed overseas. I just made a donation to @stepuponsecond based in Santa Monica, CA. This is an extraordinary organization which strives to alleviate homelessness by focusing on providing aide, support and stabilization with regard to the issue of mental illness—which in addition to alcohol and substance abuse—- so often accompanies the reason(s) why one is homeless. Mental illness is an issue that is both stigmatized and misunderstood in our society…and yet, it is linked to so many other public policy issues (e.g. the prison and educational systems). In the end, working to improve mental health is smart public policy and will result in improving other areas of policy in our country. Thank you @stepuponsecond for providing support and care for individuals and families affected by mental illness—and improving communities through out the city of Los Angeles…by far the region in the nation which contains the largest concentration of homelessness.

I have worked for the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay for the last seven years; helping clients in crisis get back on their feet, and educating the community on suicide prevention. Now, I am charged with running a program known as Every Cent Counts.
As part of the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, Every Cent Counts has been developed to help individuals, that find themselves facing a hardship and unable to meet all of their needs, a way in which to reach out to the community for assistance. I’ll be sending my donation to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I’ve been involved with the organization, through its Team in Training program, for just over a year, and I’ve met so many amazing, strong patients and survivors of blood cancers. I just found out that a friend’s son, who’s only a year and a half old, has been diagnosed with Leukemia and it gives me a whole new perspective to know that an innocent child (and many others like him) will have to fight this horrible disease and his family will have to stand by and watch. It’s devastating, but the LLS helps so many families like this one by offering support and education, financial assistance, and funding for research that will hopefully help us reach a cure for blood cancers – and all cancers.

With my donation of $10 I the weekend program for the children at Proyecto Horizonte (www.proyectohorizonte.org). In order to to build th evillage community, Proyecto Horizonte started to offer weekend programs for the children in the community. This includes sports classes and an arts&cultur program. The children can participate in all those classes and teh total cost is only $10
Proyecto Horizonte is a non-profit organization located in the community of Mineros de San Juan – Ushpa-Ushpa in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The project was founded in 2004 by a private initiative with the mission of fighting poverty and improving human development. Since its establishment Proyecto Horizonte has grown to include a nursery, a school, a health center, sports and art programs, microfinance and microenterprise initiatives, a women’s support group, an artisan’s group, and more. It currently serves over 800 children and has over 70 employees, all of which come from Bolivia. Proyecto Horizonte continues successfully supporting its community and plans to replicate its work in more places in Bolivia and other countries in the future. (501 c3 registered organization through Bolivian Charity Foundation)

I donated my $10 to GEF Seniors Housing in Edmonton. They provide subsidized housing for low income seniors. More than 500 seniors are waiting to access safe and affordable housing with GEF. More housing is needed!
I donated to the Virginia Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom an educational program that helps teachers and students learn about where their food and fiber comes from and how it impacts their lives. Founded in 2007 by Sierra Leonean native, Aisha Khadar Desince, of 99 Academy Ave in Providence Rhode Island 02908, who after visiting Sierra Leone in 2005 saw the devastation and struggle for survival that the citizens faced after the Civil War. Known to many as the “Blood Diamond” war, Ms. Desince vowed to dedicate her time, talent, and finances to assisting the citizens and rebuilding the country. Soon after, Ms. Desince and Darlis Johnson, co-founder, established Khadarlis for Sierra Leone. In the United States in the Elmhurst Area of Providence Rhode Island, Darlis and Aisha do as much as they can by providing 3 computers with Internet service for children to do home work and Adult to find job and use to secure employment. This is a wonderful camp for kids.

I donated to the San Jose Rockets a youth oriented Power Wheelchair Soccer team.

The San Jose Rockets are a development team of youth power (electric) wheelchair athletes, ages 10 to 21, and a member of Far West Wheelchair Athletic Association, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Power Soccer is the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users and the only competitive sport available to this segment of our population. These participants include persons with quadriplegia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, head trauma, stroke, spinal cord injury and other disabilities. It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s challenging! Check out the You Tube video on the Rockets website to view this exciting sport in action.
For people confined to power wheelchairs, Power Soccer can be the only place where they have an opportunity to participate in their communities and develop belief in themselves. Many live lives socially excluded from full participation in schools, or society. The sport of Power Soccer gives them continuing opportunities to think strategically, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Power Soccer athletes, and the community. Power Soccer also provides a gateway to empowerment, competence, and acceptance. With achievement comes confidence and courage; the courage to advocate for themselves in society, or to simply try something new.
Power Soccer combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself, to participate in an extremely challenging game similar to soccer. The game is played in a gymnasium on a regulation basketball court. Two teams of four power wheelchair users attack, defend, and spin-kick a 13-inch soccer ball in an attempt to score goals.
Most Power Soccer players have significant travel and equipment expenses to play the game they love so much. Many of the players are afraid of damaging their daily use power wheelchair while playing Power Soccer, so they purchase a second used chair just for playing soccer. For many of them their power wheelchair is their sole method of transporting themselves. The power wheelchair represents the feet that most of us walk on everyday and take for granted. Unfortunately, the athlete can’t simply roll down to the nearest park to play in the local soccer league. Some of the “local” Power Soccer teams are hundreds of miles away, and the regional tournaments often require flying thousands of miles to compete, so the athlete playing on a competitive team also incurs significant travel expenses to move themselves and their equipment to the next game, or tournament. Some families can afford these expenses, but others cannot, and we ask your donations to help defray some of these costs for those athletes who would love to play, but simply cannot afford the equipment, or the cost of travel.
I chose Digital Literary Arts, Incorporated, http://www.dlastudios.org, an organization devoted to the educating of youth in the art of audio and digital production through education and hands-on opportunities. This organization was born from the tragic murder of a local artist who had begun to mentor and establish other young artists within his community. Upon his demise it became evident that with his death many other’s “dreams” died also due to their lack of technical knowledge, leadership, and concern from within the industry they longed to become a part of.

I’m President/CEO of Generational Community Services Inc. in Ash Fork, AZ. Ash Fork is a rural , surpressed village-not even large enough to be classified as a town. We took over this failing nonprofit in June 2010. We inherited property taxes, and frankly a mess. The new board and I are trying to get this nonprofits taxes paid, our building finished and help people of all ages in and around our community. Services are limited here and not many local jobs so people are struggling with day to day expenses. My support goes to Redeeming Soles a Seattle base nonprofit that supplies organizations that serve the homeless and underprivileged with proper footwear. During an event in January they gave out over 800 pairs of shoes to men and women within 4 hours and they expected to collected and distribute over 50,000 during 2012. It currently cost $1 to collect, prepare and distribute one pair of shoes or two pair of new socks. $10 will make an impact on 10 lives!

I choose SoupMobile http://www.soupmobile.org. The SoupMobile is a mobile soup kitchen that feeds and shelters the homeless of Dallas. It serves 200,000 meals a year, and gives weekly groceries to those who are disenfranchised and without resources to commute and get help in South Dallas. In addition, it has 6 transitional residences for single men, women and families. Its concept of serving the broken and hungry is pretty simple: serve good hearty meals and put a roof over their heads with love. There is a huge emphasis in respecting those suffering from homelessness, citing treating someone with dignity goes far beyond the morsels served to them. And this small organization also has an emergency response team that it dispatches to disaster stricken areas (such as fire, flood, hurricane, etc) where they set up shop supplying emergency supplies and food to displaced communities. I was moved the first time I visited their humble headquarters and saw their little ambulance, with a “SoupMobile Emergency Response Team” written on it. And I did see that little ambulance quite few times as it zoomed under freeway passes to supply blankets and food during cold nights. I love love love——— this organization. 🙂

I’m making my donation to the WriterCoach Connection http://www.writercoachconnection.org, a program that brings volunteers into middle and high schools in the San Francisco East Bay to work one-on-one with students on their writing and critical thinking skills. Our vision is that students discover the power and richness of their own voices and learn to communicate their ideas with clarity, confidence, and pride. This will enable them to create academic success, meet personal challenges with self-assurance, expand their career options, and become greater contributors to their communities.
Participating students, teachers and administrators love the program – students especially appreciate the help they receive and the relationship they form with their coaches. And the program is working: students’ grades are going up, more papers are getting turned in, English language learners are mastering comprehension and writing more quickly, and teachers are able to give out more complex writing assignments.
What a great way to start the weekend! I’ll be joining Maureen and helping East Bay students reach their fullest potential this fall. California students are losing so much as budgets become tighter, and us adults have plenty to lose as well. One-on-one coaching can be so incredible for students AND their coaches. Thanks Maureen!

Our efforts are focused on the children of Utila’s public school so they can get an education. We raise awareness and funds to ensure that every child has the mandatory uniform to attend school and that the many students who come to school hungry, without a lunch, are provided a warm meal at school.
