Odds Are, Your Nonprofit Has a Facebook Community Page :: Find It, Claim It, and Link It to Your Official Page

8/7/11 Update: You can no longer link community pages to your official page. Instead, you can now merge them.


Over the last month Facebook has created millions of Community Pages. As I understand it, Community Pages are created based on what Facebook users have mentioned on their personal Facebook profiles. For example, someone mentioned the Scleroderma Research Foundation on Facebook, and now the Scleroderma Research Foundation has a Community Page:

Now… a couple of things:

1) Community Pages seem to trump Official Pages in Facebook Searches. Also, when Facebook users opt-in to “Connect” their profiles to pages, the connection is often to the Community Page and not the Official Page. That’s the feedback I am getting from folks on LinkedIn.

2) Search for your organization on Facebook to see if there is a Community Page for your organization. If you can’t find one, try searching from someone else’s Facebook account who is not an Admin or does not “Like” your organization’s Official Page.

3) Once you find it, click the “sign up” link. All you have to do is click it once to complete the sign up process.

4) “Suggest” your Official Facebook Page. This capability is a new development. It wasn’t there a few days ago. I did it for one nonprofit. You get a message that says “Thanks for improving the Page!”, but no obvious changes seem to occur. This is a new feature and shows that Facebook is listening.

For now, that’s all I know. Many are wondering if there is way to request that the Community Page be deleted. I don’t think so. Facebook is changing almost daily. Just make sure you do 1-4 above and then we wait to see happens next.

    Thanks for the help! I was just wondering about this a few days ago! I’m still confused on if there’s a way I can link the “official site” and the “official facebook page” to the Community Page.

    One other way to find a Community Page is through your own profile. If your non-profit is shown as your employer, when you click on it, it will take you to the Community Page.

    Thank you so much for this information. Earlier in the week, I learned that we had a community page but didn’t know what to do about it. Because of your easy-to-follow steps, I was able to “claim” our page. VITA (Volunteer Instructors Teaching Adults) has just started social networking, and I would hate for there to be any problems along the way.

    Our N.P. has two community pages created by FB – one for the “business” and one for the “activity”. I’ve followed the directions above for both. I actually clicked on the link to suggest an official (or Wikipedia) site twice… once with our actual FB fan page URL, and once with our regular website URL.

    Luckily, only one person has become a “Liker” of one community page thus far. I’ve sent her a direct message inviting her to become a fan of our main FB fan page for regular updates on our organization’s activities.

    We’re all really stuck between a rock and a hard place with FB these days!

    Ugh – the content for the community page for Kabissa was pulled from wikipedia, which is out of date. Why does Facebook keep moving things up on my todo list?

    I have suggested the Kabissa official page at http://www.kabissa.org and asked to help “improve” the Kabissa community page on FAcebook. I will now go update Kabissa on wikipedia.

    Call me confused, but what came see is a sort of copy of the EMW_UK fan page (forget what they call them now) of which I am admin. So I presume this is a way for other people to find “my” charity ? and I don’t actually need to do anything.

    OAP + stroke = stupidity unless things are very obvious !

      The “copy” is your Community Page… not much you can do besides claim it and link it… as described above.

    I found that our organization has 3 community pages with our full name and 4 community pages with our acronym. How can we get Facebook to combine these? Seems counter productive to have 8 pages related to our organization. Thoughts?

    I did find my non profit’s community page and facebook misspelled our name! How do I change it?

    How do I get a community page for my organization if I don’t have one yet?

      Community Pages are automatically generated… if you want to create one, add your organization as an “employer” on your personal profile. Your nonprofit might have a page already though…

    I don’t see a “sign up” option on my organization’s community page. Should I “claim” the page? What does that do to our official page?
